Whiteware Recycling, Auckland

Fridges, appliances & aircon — we pay you, the dump charges you.

Whiteware is the family name for household and commercial appliances, including fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, range hoods, microwaves, toasters, steel kettles, air-conditioners, and heat pumps. Under the enamel and plastic, it is mostly light-gauge steel wrapped around recoverable copper, aluminium, and wiring.

Whiteware is not one flat price. It breaks into four distinct grades, each priced on its own: fridges (bought at our Onehunga yard), air-conditioning units and heat pumps, industrial air-conditioning units, and all other whiteware, which grades as dirty light-gauge steel. Every grade is priced per yard, so check the rates at the yard you are coming to before you load up. Fridges and air-con units are degassed responsibly before processing.

Visit either our scrap metal Onehunga yard or our Wairau Valley branch on the North Shore, and our team will take you through how your whiteware recycling payouts are calculated.

We pay for scrap fridges & whiteware at our Onehunga yard
degassed responsibly, no dump fees.

Get Paid, Not Charged

The transfer station charges you to dump an old fridge. We do the opposite: bring your scrap fridges and appliances to our Onehunga yard, and we will pay you for them. Most yards will not.

How it works

You do not need to pull anything apart before you bring it in. Whole appliances are fine. We take the unit exactly as it is and handle the sorting and processing ourselves, so there is no dismantling, no sorting, and nothing for you to figure out.

Fridges, freezers, and air-conditioners hold refrigerant gas that must be removed under controlled conditions, so we degas them properly and dispose of any hazardous parts responsibly. It is a cleaner, easier alternative to leaving an old appliance at the kerb or paying to send it to landfill.

the recycling process

how whiteware is recycled

A single appliance contains several recoverable metals plus components that need careful handling. Here's what happens to your whiteware once it arrives at our yard.

1

intake & degassing

Fridges, freezers, and heat pumps are degassed first — refrigerant is recovered responsibly before any processing begins.

2

dismantling & sorting

Appliances are stripped into their material streams: steel bodies, copper motor windings, aluminium, brass fittings, and any e-waste components.

3

metal recovery

Each metal stream is graded and consolidated with the rest of our yard material — steel to the mills, copper and aluminium to their export grades.

4

responsible disposal

Refrigerants, capacitors, and any hazardous parts are handled to the right standard so nothing harmful ends up in landfill.

licensed & compliant

certified refrigerant recovery

We're one of the few Auckland yards legally certified to recover refrigerant gas from fridges, freezers and air-conditioners — captured and handled properly, never vented to the atmosphere where it acts as a greenhouse gas hundreds of times stronger than CO₂. We hold a WorkSafe Approved Fillers certification under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

How to Prepare Your Whiteware

A little preparation makes drop-off faster and cleaner. Here's how to get your whiteware ready.

  • Empty it out: Remove food, water, and loose contents from fridges, washers, and dishwashers before you bring them in.
  • Leave the refrigerant to us: Do not attempt to release or drain gas from fridges, freezers, or heat pumps, as we degas them safely and legally.
  • Disconnect gas bottles: Remove any LPG bottle from gas stoves and barbecues before drop-off.
  • Electronics go to e-waste: TVs, computers, and small electronics belong in our e-waste stream, not in whiteware.
  • Strip for more value: If you have already pulled the copper motor or aluminium out, bring it separately, as clean metals pay more on their own.

Pro tip: Landlords, property managers and builders clearing multiple units should ask our team about scrap metal bin hire and bulk collection. We can manage a whole load of appliances in one go.

sustainability

Why Recycle Whiteware?

Every appliance recycled keeps a body of steel, a copper motor, and aluminium parts out of landfill — and keeps refrigerant gases out of the atmosphere. Whiteware is one of the highest-volume metal recovery streams in any city.

3+

metals recovered

Steel, copper, and aluminium — plus brass and trace metals — are recovered from a single appliance.

∞

endlessly recyclable

The metals inside whiteware can be melted and recast infinitely without losing quality.

~75%

metal by weight

Around three-quarters of a typical large appliance is recyclable metal — steel, copper and aluminium, all returned to circulation.

When you recycle whiteware with Endless, the metals re-enter the circular economy and harmful refrigerants are handled safely rather than being buried in landfill.

what we pay

Pricing: What We Pay

Whiteware is valued on the metals recovered from it (primarily steel, with copper and aluminium adding extra value). We pay you for whiteware and never charge you to drop it off. What you are paid depends on the item and its condition.

metal content

Appliances with more copper and aluminium — like fridges and washing machines with large motors — carry more recoverable value than mostly-plastic units.

refrigerant handling

Fridges, freezers, and heat pumps require safe degassing, which is factored into how they're handled.

condition & completeness

Complete appliances are easiest to process. Stripped or partially dismantled units are assessed on what's left.

volume

Landlords, builders, and commercial sites clearing multiple units should ask about bulk drop-off and collection.

We pay you — we don't charge. Unlike the transfer station, which charges a fee to dump an old fridge, we pay for scrap fridges and whiteware at our Onehunga yard, along with air-conditioning units. The rate depends on the metal content; call 0800 44 88 99 or send a photo and we'll tell you what it's worth before you load up.

Yes. Don't try to remove the refrigerant yourself — we degas fridges, freezers and heat pumps responsibly and legally as part of processing.

Fridges, freezers, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, ovens, stoves, rangehoods, microwaves, toasters, steel kettles and other household and commercial appliances.

Whiteware is appliances like fridges, washers, dryers and ovens. Electronics like TVs, computers and phones are e-waste, which we don't process — see our e-waste guide for where to take those. If an item has both, we'll sort it.

Empty out food, water and loose contents; leave any refrigerant gas alone for us to handle; and disconnect any LPG bottle from gas stoves or BBQs. Then bring it in whole.

Yes — most whiteware is largely recoverable metal, though how much varies from one item to the next. There’s no need to pull anything apart, though: bring the whole appliance in and we’ll recover the metal safely, which is why whiteware is worth recycling with us rather than dumping.

Yes. Landlords, property managers and builders clearing multiple units should ask our team about bulk collection — we can take a whole load of appliances in one go.

Both yards — Onehunga and Wairau Valley — accept household and commercial whiteware. Drive in during business hours.

Yes — appliances are mostly metal. The steel body, copper motor windings and aluminium parts are all fully recyclable and can be reused indefinitely, while refrigerants and hazardous parts are handled responsibly.
