Domestic copper is the catch-all grade for mixed copper scrap that doesn’t meet #1 or #2 standards. It typically includes plumbing fittings with brass attachments, copper pipe with solder and flux residue, valves, copper with plastic or rubber still attached, and soil-contaminated copper from underground pipes. This grade is common among Auckland tradespeople doing bathroom and kitchen renovations. Domestic copper is still worth recycling — it just receives a lower rate because the recycler must invest more labour in sorting and cleaning before export.
