Tip #1: Keep the honeycomb (aka biscuit) intact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We pay for the biscuit inside\u2014so don\u2019t crack it. Leave it inside its casing and handle with care. Also, don’t eat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip #2: Keep the biscuit dry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The biscuit holds precious metals and gets dipped in a protective solution. If it gets wet, that layer can wash off, reducing its value. Keep it dry. Save the dunking for Tim Tams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip #3: Remove both ends of the exhaust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We need to see the biscuit to pay you properly. Ask your mechanic to cut off both ends of the exhaust when replacing the converter. Some biscuits are damaged, but we can\u2019t tell until it\u2019s exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip #4: Spruce up your catalytic converter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The easiest way for us to be able to identify your catalytic converter to determine its value is by the serial number. The serial number is usually stamped on its outer shell\u2014often located in the square opening of a heatshield, corner, or edge. Once you\u2019ve located the serial number, see if you can easily make out each number\/letter. Sometimes a serial number isn\u2019t clearly visible due to rust, dirt, or because it has faded over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it\u2019s not easily legible, no worries! Simply put some gloves on and rub the number with some steel wool to remove the rust or dirt. You can also use a touch of spray paint on the area\u2014but rub it off immediately afterward with some paper towels. Alternatively, put a few drops of grease\/oil on the area and wipe it off with some paper towels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip #5: Lights! Camera! Action!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once your serial number is nice and clear, save yourself some time (read: money) by getting a quote ahead of your visit. Make sure to take photos of the top, bottom, and both sides (with the exhaust pipes removed). Take your photos in a well-lit area so that the serial number is clearly visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
